There isn’t one item I’d call the most important. I wouldn’t want to be without the entire package in an emergency!
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Probably the water…can’t survive long without that.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
I think the most important item of the 72-hour kit is a toss-up between the first aid kit and the water.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Of course the water is at the top of our list of the MOST important item in the kit. If you ask my husband, he would say with a laugh, the “Swiss Army style knife”. My 2nd item would be the toothbrush and toothpaste because I wouldn’t want to be in the ‘tube tent’ “up close and personal” without both us being able to brush our teeth. Yu….cky!

Most important….water.
Must have for me…..tp.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:36 AM
I think the waterproof matches are priceless!!
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 AM
toothpaste…always want fresh breath for whoever saves you. No, really…I would say the army knife is pretty important.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:04 PM
I’d have to go with the water. It’s extremely important! But I think everything could be very useful in an emergency.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:14 PM
I think the water is MOST important, but a close second would have to be the TP!
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Water, definitely the most important essential for me.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:16 PM
I would have to agree that the first aid kit would be top of my list but I also love the backpack that all these essentials come in, very nice.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:18 PM
waterproof matches.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Water is extremely important in taking care of yourself. Forget who might come to rescue you and your fresh breath! Ha. Worry about taking care of your own self first. It is nice to have all the items all together.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Water! But the backpack to carry it all in is pretty handy too!
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:31 PM
I think water is probably most important.

I feel water is essential.

The water. But all would be useful. Love the handy backpack to carry it all in!
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Depending on the circumstance, different thing would be the most important. So I will say the backpack, because it keeps everything together and keeps it all in a handy place. Often times in an emergency, just knowing where to find things and quickly is very important.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:19 PM
The water is the most important, especially in such a compact form that can be easily portioned out.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:20 PM
There are so many good things to choose from, but water is going to have to be my number one. After that it would depend on the circumstances me and my family were in. That is why each thing could top my list at different times.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 PM
I think Food is more important in this area. We have water stored at various locations within 4 hrs walk. I just prey I dont have to use any of a 72hr kit.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 PM
Gotta be the water.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:37 PM
I think that the water is the most important part of this 72 hr kit. If the water becomes contaminated I would need a safe sorce.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:44 PM
As has been stated by many the entire backpack is important however if left to choose from just one item I would have to say that the water is the most important since we cannot survive with out it.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Water for sure! You can live without food for a while, but not water!
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Hard to choose just one thing. I like it all!
I’ll say the water boxes. Much more convient way of packing water, than the 2 liter bottles.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I would have to say water first and then the first aid kit. If you don’t have water you won’t survive very long and then you wouldn’t need the rest.
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:51 PM

First the water, then the 2400 calorie bars. If you have food and water — and the army knife — your set to handle ANY emergency. You can build your own shelter, and there are ways to protect yourself from the elements, but you MUST have food and water.
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:03 PM
The water is definitely the most important item in the kit. Everything else is icing on the cake.
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:32 PM
The water would be very important because you can’t survive without it.
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:42 PM
The most important item is….hmmmm…it is so hard to choose! I think it would be the energy bar.
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Couldnt live without the water…especially here in Texas when it’s 100+ degrees!

I think you would need the water more than anything else, but of course I would prefer the rest of the contents in an emergency as well

I think the gloves and masks are the most useful. These are t hings that no one includes in their storage. Everyone stores food, water, and a first aid kit.
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:28 PM
I would say the water. However, a radio would be handy too for getting updates and information.
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:29 PM
I am a Nurse xo I think the Water, First Aid Kit and maks are the most important items in this family kit. Thanks
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 PM
Of course the water is most important. It’s an obvious. But I must say I’d really appreciate the 2400 calorie bars in an emergency!

July 22nd, 2009 at 4:08 PM
Gotta go with the water.
