Looking for our birthday giveaway? You’re getting warmer! Visit this blog post for entry rules and all the information you need.

If you ask me, the spirit of the holidays is all about hope. Young children hope to wake up to a snow-covered world on Christmas morning or to see a shiny new bike under the tree. We hope that loved ones traveling from far away will reach their destinations safely. New Year’s celebrations are all about hope in better things to come, hope in a new beginning. At this time of year when you have so much to hope for, Shelf Reliance humbly asks that you give hope to a family that needs it so desperately.

4-year-old Benson Skinner and 2-year-old Claire Skinner are two great kids afflicted with one tough disease. Benson and Claire have a rare genetic disease called Primary Hyperoxaluria. This condition causes their livers to produce too much oxalate, which leads to severe kidney damage.

Primary Hyperoxaluria progresses at different rates depending on the individual. Claire has been in kidney failure since she was 2 months old. Dialysis has allowed her to grow and develop into an adorable 2-year-old child, but, as you can imagine, undergoing those treatments for as much as 15 hours a day hasn’t been easy on her small body. Claire needs a new kidney and a new liver to solve the problem, and she is currently on the Mayo Clinic transplant list to receive both organs.

Benson’s condition has progressed a bit more slowly than Claire’s. He takes several medications and drinks plenty of fluids to keep his kidneys as clean as possible. Eventually, he will likely need the same transplant procedures that Claire is waiting for.

The cost of a transplant often exceeds $500,000, not to mention the cost of anti-rejection medication. In order to get some extra financial help, Benson and Claire are part of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA).

Oct 6

We’re well into the month of October, which means that the holiday season will soon be in full swing. This time of year, when the weather turns chillier and our homes look increasingly festive, is particularly risky in terms of home fires. Christmas trees, fireplaces, and decorative candles can all contribute to the danger. Let’s go over a few tips that will help your family to prevent a dangerous and costly disaster this winter.

1006 fire prevention Sharing is Caring: Fire Safety & Prevention

  • Gather together as a household and create an escape plan. Be thorough as you walk through your home and inspect possible exits.  One great method is to draw a floor plan of your home that clearly shows two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Escape routes should be clear of items that could cause someone to trip; doors and windows should be easy for everyone in the home to open, as far as is possible. Once your plan is in place, practice practice practice! It’s best to run through your plan in different circumstances (daytime, nighttime, winter, etc.).
  • Install and test smoke alarms in and immediately outside every sleeping room and on every level of the home.
  • Is your street number clearly visible from the road? If not, it will be difficult for emergency personnel to find your home. Consider painting your street number on the curb or installing house numbers in a well-lit area.
  • As part of your emergency escape plan, designate someone to assist any babies, older adults, and other family members who have trouble getting around. A backup helper should be assigned as well, just in case the designee is away from home during the emergency.
  • When guests are visiting, take a moment to familiarize them with your fire escape plan. You can also take initiative when staying overnight at other people’s homes by asking about their escape plan. If they don’t have a plan in place, you can offer to help them make one. This kind of attitude is especially important when kids attend sleepovers at friends’ homes. (more…)

I just wanted to take a quick second to let everyone know about a great deal that’s going on right now at shelfreliance.com. Our Harvest 72″ food rotation system (yes, the same model we’re giving away) is currently available at it’s regular price of $459.99. However, from now until this Saturday (June 20th), everyone who purchases a Harvest 72″ (or a Harvest 72″ #10) will also receive a Pantry 39″ free of charge. This is a great way to cut down on costs by getting two great food rotation systems at once, and it also qualifies for free shipping (as with all orders over $199). The Pantry will be added to your order once it has been processed. The Pantry 39″ will not appear in your shopping cart, so don’t worry. Just use this coupon code at checkout:  FRSPAN

The fine print you need to know: this offer is not valid on previous purchases. Discount applied to MSRP. May not be combined with any other offer. Excludes purchase of multipacks. Only one per household. Does not apply to past orders. Free standard shipping within the contiguous U.S. only. Offer ends June 20, 2009

As the person who’s been reading through and monitoring all the giveaway entries, I can definitely say that the response has exceeded our expectations! So many people have entered (over 1,700 at this point), and I just thank my lucky stars that I don’t have to pick the winner myself! Everyone wants to win; everyone would benefit from having the Harvest 72″ at home. It would be impossible to for me to choose the most deserving entry, so it’s a good thing that the winner will be chosen randomly by our fancy-schmancy technical application. There’s still plenty of time to get your entries in! I’m seriously excited to learn who the winner will be. Stay tuned! More great giveaways will be coming your way every two weeks!
